Manuscript Submissions

Aspiring authors are welcome to submit a book proposal for consideration

Guidelines for non-fiction proposals

 
  1. The author’s title, full name and surname, telephone numbers and e-mail address.
  2. A summary of the work in one sentence.
  3. A short overview or synopsis of the work in about 400 words of three to four paragraphs.
  4. A short description of about a page about the need in the market that the work addresses.
  5. Biographical information about the author(s) of about a page or half a page that shows why the author is qualified to write about the subject. List previously published works and articles and sales information. Include a small photograph of yourself in colour.
  6. List any endorsements of your work by relevant persons.
  7. Include a description of the target reader or audience. Why would anyone buy your book? How can the target audience be reached? Do you have any special relationship to the market? What books and magazines does this audience already read? What radio and TV programs do they tune into?
  8. How are you able to reach your target audience to market your book? Do you have an existing platform to reach your readers? Do you have a regular blog or newsletter, Twitter followers or Facebook friends (include stats) and are you willing to participate in speaking events?
  9. What other books of the past 5 years are in print on the same subject? How is your book different and better?
  10. How many words will your book be? How long after the signing of a contract will it take you to complete the book?
  11. Include a chapter outline with chapter titles and a few short sentences that capture each chapter’s theme.
  12. Include your introduction and one or two full chapters.

Guidelines for fiction proposals

  4. Who is the audience for the book? Why would somebody buy this book? How is this audience reached? Do you have any special relationships to the market? What books and magazines does this audience already read? What radio and TV programmes do they tune into?
  5. Biographical information about the author(s) of about a page or half a page that shows why the author is qualified to write about the subject. List previously published works and articles and sales information. Have you received any awards or special degrees or certificates in creative writing? Include a small photograph of yourself in colour.
  6. How are you able to reach your target audience to market your book? Do you have an existing platform to reach your readers? Do you have a regular blog or newsletter, Twitter followers or Facebook friends (include stats) and are you willing to participate in speaking events?
  7. List four novels that are similar to yours in some way and include a few sentences about each book and how yours is similar and why it would appeal to the same audience.
  8. How many words will your book be? How many chapters will there be? Have you included possible questions for discussion? Is your manuscript complete or how long will it take to complete?
  9. Describe the story, from start to finish, in 3 to 5 pages.
  10. Include the first 50 pages of your manuscript.
